Manufacturing takes the early lead on AI – AI in 60 Seconds

Jun 13, 2024 | AI in 60 Seconds, Our Thoughts

Generative AI Adoption Trends:

  • Manufacturing and Financial Services are among the top 5 leading industries in generative AI adoption. Leading regions include Australia, China, Germany, India, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. The UK and the US lead in Financial Services but lag in Manufacturing.

  • Our analysis of 7,000 AI tools reveals a significant shift in how AI Creators market and present their products. As AI fatigue sets in, these companies are moving away from emphasizing “AI” and instead focusing on the tangible business value their tools deliver, without mentioning underlying generative AI technology. Examples include messaging such as “Predict equipment maintenance needs,” “Identify cost-saving opportunities based on trends,” and “Optimize proposals based on historical win rate.”

  • Our June 2024 data shows that, after initial rapid adoption, the percentage of organizations piloting AI chatbots, such as Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, declined by 3 points month-over-month. CXOs explain that the decline stems not from issues with the underlying large language models themselves but from a lack of skills in effectively using generative AI.

  • In contrast, the usage of specialized AI agents for tasks like personalized marketing, training, and interfacing with data via user-friendly interfaces continues to rise sharply. Our data shows that 68% of employees at companies of all sizes are introducing these solutions at work, a trend dubbed BYOAI–Bring Your Own AI.

AI and Society:

  • Nine of every ten frontline workers can extract the needed insights from AI on their first try, compared to just three of every ten Knowledge Workers and Management. See details here.

  • Over 10,000 individuals have completed their Digital Skills Assessment using our Digital Skills Compass™; the average score is 42/100, revealing a significant skills gap. A score between 50 and 60 indicates a solid foundation for effectively harnessing AI.  Learn more and get your score here.
