The AI Adoption Paradox: Tools Abound, Skills Scarce
Adoption Landscape: A Tale of Two AIs:
- Growing pains in Generative AI continue:Â As we shared previously, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot business deployments are experiencing hiccups due to gaps in employees’ skills related to prompt engineering. Salesforce research confirms our findings:Â over 50% of sales and customer service professionals can’t maximize generative AI’s value.
- Single-purpose AI tools shine:Â While broad AI solutions struggle, niche apps solving specific needs thrive. Customer-facing roles report high adoption:
- 81% use AI for multimedia content generation.
- 78% for analyzing market data.
- 69% for automating communications and outreach.
- Departmental race: Marketing leads AI adoption at 62%, followed by Sales (48%) and Service (40%). Content creation and data analysis roles are pioneering the AI revolution.
- Nonprofit sector hesitations: The Google Nonprofits survey confirms our September 2023 findings and the continuous decline in our global tracker—80% of nonprofits cite trust issues, while 25% lack an understanding of AI’s potential. Our AI Compass for Nonprofits aims to bridge this gap, showcasing possibilities with affordable tools.
- Employee-driven innovation persists: Despite obstacles, 68% of organizations operate under employee-led AI adoption (up 3 points compared to the previous month).
The Great Upskilling Imperative:
- AI skills demand explodes: According to our analysis of 1,800 job postings, job postings requiring AI skills have grown 25x (Randstad reports 20x). 80% of business leaders value ChatGPT skills in applicants. Nonprofits lag, with only four in 10 leaders sharing this view.
- Training scarcity crisis: Seven out of 10 employees expect generative AI training from their employers. However, 90% of them are not getting it, and they switch to social media videos, discussion groups, and peers for training and sharing tips.
- Training preferences shift: 80% of workers prefer short-form videos (30 seconds) on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, alongside AI-powered training assistants. Large vendors stuck in the past with PDFs and long-form content are missing the mark.
Bright Spots and Emerging Trends:
- ChatGPT still reigns supreme: Despite adoption challenges, it remains the #1 tool across all departments and industries. In most cases, employees introduce it without structured governance on data sharing practices. Furthermore, employees who use the free version might be training OpenAI models with the organizations’ data.
- Claude makes waves: Anthropic’s AI assistant enters our global tracker’s top 10 for the first time. Our lab tests show that Claude Sonnet 3.5 outperforms GPT-4o in content personalization and creation while being 37% faster.
- Copilot Ada success: Users report 92% satisfaction and a 2x increase in generative AI tool usage after using it as their virtual tutor for Prompt Engineering learning. See it in action at CopilotAda.ai.
